Goodbye Etsy …
Shattered
There seems to be a lot of chatter and general dismay over Etsy’s new deal that has shattered the lives and livelihoods for a whole bunch of Etsy sellers. Etsy Sellers of Reddit is a good source to discuss and verify the draconian rule of the almighty Etsy platform. I’m one of the casualties.
Go MaxSold
I decided to let Etsy close my shop instead of fighting an unwinnable war. I am beginning a new website to feature some of my favorite things. In the meantime, I have/had a LOT of inventory. I’ve sent thousands of items to an online auction site; MaxSold. This is my current Maxsold auction. Just do it, you will not be sorry, just get rid of everything (or almost everything) and start over.
It’s to be expected that as a seller, you will wrestle with the injustice and loss bestowed upon you by some random person at Etsy, indiscriminately toying with your fate. I am telling you, Get Over It. Liquidate. Send your stuff to auction and start over on your own terms. Etsy owns your shop, you have no say in it’s future or demise. Etsy rules. Shop policies are meaningless, empty words. Be aware.
No Silver Lining for Sellers, Silverman
As much as seller’s try to satisfy every need, wish and desire of buyers, Etsy rulers require more, oh, so much more. Sellers are now expected to compete with Amazon. Wasn’t the whole point of this visionary platform to replace this idea? Wasn’t this the one place everyone could join in to become the alternative to Amazon? Buyers have the upper hand thanks to Silverman’s Buyer Protection Program and they know it.
Follow the Money
But, hey Silverman knows what side of the bread his income is buttered on, and it ain’t the sellers. It’s the stockholders of course who in 2022 rewarded Silverman $40 million a year plus a compensation package, a spectacular increase beyond a measly 1.9 million in 2021. This – after the increased sellers fees debacle and subsequent Sellers Strike in April of the same year!
That’s What She Said
And check this out from the Added Value Resource website: ” … The strike successfully shined a light on challenges sellers face on the platform and called into question whether the recent fee increase will really benefit buyers and sellers (as Etsy claims) or if the extra revenue will simply go to shareholders and executive compensation.
Looking at that compensation chart, and the incentives provided by such a heavy emphasis on stock options, it’s difficult not to question where the priorities of the board and executive leadership really lie.
While there has been no official direct response or engagement between leadership and the strike participants, COO Raina Moskowitz was clearly on the defensive and feeling the pressure of public scrutiny in a recent blog post titled Delivering Value To Etsy Sellers. …”
Bullying on the Playground Karma
Just bullying those who make Etsy what it is, or was is a karmic thing, so we shall see how this plays out. At the end of the day, shouldn’t the little guy, gal, artist, conservator, inventor or creator be given a fighting chance? Etsy is just one among endless deceptive opportunists and radical capitalists in the playing field. But, that is no excuse. And isn’t it a pretty idea that Silverman would give back a little (of that obscene amount of money) to artists, creators and entrepreneurs who just want to sell their stuff and stay in the game?
Call me Pollyanna.

sell at an auction when it’s time to fold your tent, an etsy seller’s true story…
Going, going, gone … Selling off some supa dupa vintage gems in my first MaxSold auction that ends tonight 10/21/22 at 8pm, est. I am so very lucky to have the MaxSold auction site in my back pocket, and so very, very thankful! When things went sideways with the “new and improved” regime in Etsy world, my shop took several hits, even though I was a star seller, with an exceptional track record.
Get it Gone!
The best way to let things go and start anew is by auction. Everything is listed and in one day, everything is gone, and you have money in your pocket. It’s a pure and cleansing experience to let go of all the reminders you’ve invested in for a company that does not give one whit about me or you, as sellers.
It’s a brilliant alternative as these same items could have been tied up my shop for another 2 years, especially since my year over year presence had mysteriously dropped by 63%. There are no coincidences, just sayin’.
Ask Yourself, Is it Worth it?
So, here you are, on Etsy’s “bad” list, your investment is tied up in your extensive product line, not to mention storage space, or the dreaded free shipping “suggestion” by Esty. Also, the surprise “direct marketing” charges to your account, disputes with exploitive buyers with the hard reality that you will never be allowed an appeal, for any unfair, or unwarranted decision.
At the end of the day, my costs to sell on Etsy hovered around 30%. I actually ended up making less than an overseas sweat shop worker.
Etsy Cares About You?
Etsy closed my shop after I refused to accept an unwarranted $1200 charge back to my account. As this was all going down, I had evacuated to Savannah, Georgia due to a mandatory evacuation directive in anticipation of Hurricane Ian. Etsy closed my shop the day I returned home.
It is not easy to fold your tent, when you have thousands of items to liquidate. In fact, the task was too much for me and I ended up in the emergency room. Thanks Etsy! Keeping in mind your “Keep Commerce Human” motto, and all.
Moving hundreds of pounds in Etsy stock sent me to the Emergency room. Dive In
So, when you hear, read and see “good will” Etsy stories, take a closer look. Josh Silverman’s business plan, initiatives, and revelations have ruined Etsy.
From Vox: “Was Etsy too good to be true? The people who built Etsy dreamed of remaking commerce with their bare hands. Fifteen years later, its sellers are being asked to compete with Amazon.”
That’s What She said
But, the entrepreneurial troops will keep on truckin’, after all, not so very long ago, there was no Etsy. Someday, there will be a platform that can and will make money with some stunning talent at the helm (maybe a smart gal this time?), who will actually know how to keep commerce human …
and nice.

etsy buyer protection program fails etsy sellers …
in case you missed it …
If you think you run your own shop when you sell on the Etsy platform, you are dead wrong. Sellers are not protected. More on that later, all the deets will be in my next blog. or the kicker: the Etsy motto; “Keep Commerce Human” ….
you will find hard truths in the soft underbelly of this money making machine. In fact Josh Silverman, Etsy Ceo, was awarded a 40 million dollar bonus following the rate hike and Etsy seller strike earlier this year.
Well, that doesn’t seem fair, does it?
So, when it’s time to cut bait, by let’s say a “seasoned” individual like me, it’s all about choices. Stay and let the punishment continue, yas, master, or move on. No one likes a whiner. But, there are thousands of sellers, like me, who have been kicked in the shins one too many times.
Liquidation of my Etsy store began yesterday. My very cool vintage item and clothing collections are up for auction on the Maxsold platform now with an end date of October 21, 2022. The next auction is planned for the end of November, so stay tuned.
So, this is just a short and sweet notification of where things are at with my vintage by jolie project for now.
It’s a sweet life, everything’s going to be okay.

the party, the plan & paella in the pan
Paella, ” … it’s an orgiastic feast for the senses. A festival of sights, sounds and colors.” Kramer (Seinfeld, The Raincoats, Part 2, 1994)
the time that the Seinfeld’s snubbed Estelle Costanza’s paella … Sounds like a party to me. I don’t know about you, but the idea of a festival of sights, sounds and colors all wrapped up in one good party dish sounds like nirvana to me. The party is all about the meshing of big deliciousness in a big ‘ol Paella pan. What kind of person on this earth could resist such an enticing sensual culinary proposition?
The Plan
So, the plan is all about getting some really nice ingredients, using great cookware, and ringing up a bunch of cool cats to share and savor the bounty. Just so you know, I’m all about vintage cookware, well, and you know, food, of course. Since I’m diving in, the history, recipes, stories, and folk lore can be quite a fun read. So, follow me for some random little nuggets of Paella truths.
Cookware Matters & My Almost Dansk Obsession
But that Dansk cookware. To me, it makes every cooking event sooo much better. The stellar quality of good old cookware really adds another dimension to the whole cooking/party thing. It’s where Copenhagen style and design meets superior engineering, man. Plus, Dansk has had Paella pans as part of their cooking repertoire since 1954. You don’t have to be an elitist to appreciate the art of design and quality of the brand. Their mantra: “Timeless Design since 1954, Soul, not surface design, Not decoration, humanity, Not machinery, Creativity, Not Conformity.” I love that.
Available Now … So I wondered about this Spanish dish, some say, it’s not Spanish at all. And even though it isn’t and hasn’t been “trending” at all, ever, what keeps aficionados interested and true to the craft?
Because Dansk cookware specializes in quality, design and function, I thought there must have been, or is a swank and savvy culinary underground cult, hip to the art and form of “Paella & the Pan”. Who were, and are, these mystic cooks? I am not sure, but I know I already like them, a lot.
Vintage Paella pans have a bit of a holy grail vibe about them, some are in great condition and some have been used with purposeful determination and show their tough but beautiful personalities. What stories they must hold.
It’s Complicated
But enough about that for now. Just what is this wonderful dish that has captured the imagination and kitchens of cooks who entertain at home with free and confident cosmopolitan abandon?
I wanted to know so much more, which is no easy thing, with it’s ancient roots and diverse ingredient variations. My friend Mark during a few visits to Spain tried Paella in different cities and has determined that this dish is “the pits”, cheap food for poor people. I wasn’t there, but he’s always spot on. Maybe the beloved recipes that we have come to know are the ideation of a perfect Paella, far removed form it’s origins, or what is served to visiting tourists.
Who doesn’t love any dish that begins with rice? Originating a few hundred years ago in the region of Valencia on the Eastern coast of Spain, Paella’s roots have since deepened. It is widely known as Spain’s emblematic dish made from a combination of vegetables and meats with varying ingredients and spices depending on the region. Characteristically it is seasoned with saffron, (but it must be Spanish saffron I have heard), and typically includes other spices as well.
Old as the Hills
But putting some rice together in a pan with whatever else is on hand has got to be as old as the hills. So here’s what I found out about the ancients on the Everyday Food Blog:
” … According to legend, paella comes from the clever way the Moors tackled their leftovers. Servants in the noble courts of Arabic Spain would take home the leftovers from the royal tables, and put them together in a pan with some rice.
This would make a lot more sense as an origin story, since both rice and saffron both came to Spain with the Moors. That’s why modern Spanish still uses versions of the Arabic words for rice and saffron! …”
It’s a very interesting dish with a complicated history, a fringe Spanish, Moorish, Arabic twist of a dish that was at one time favored by Spain’s fascist leader, Francisco Franco. Franco would search out the best Paella in town. Everyone was making the dish, and every shop in town got on that Fascists’ loving Paella wagon. Franco died in 1975 ending Europe’s longest dictatorships, but Paella – lives on.
It’s All About the Rice
So the particular variations and quality of each ingredient in the dish matters, and it matters a lot. From using the correct Spanish saffron and Spanish Chorizo to using the proper rice, from Bonny Wolfe’s Paella Perfect blog at NPR:
“… Real paella, I learned, is all about the rice.
And, you can’t use just any rice. Bomba is the best, and of course, it’s from Spain. This short-grained rice can absorb about three times more liquid than regular rice, meaning three times more flavor for your paella. Despite all the liquid, the rice remains firm. Bomba and other Spanish short-grained rice are available from specialty food shops and by mail. Bomba, however, is not cheap. Fortunately, easily available Arborio — the rice used to make risotto — can be used. Just stay away from long-grained rice that is less absorbent and doesn’t have the right taste or texture. …”
Perfection in a Pan
So, you ask, what is the all time perfect and titillating paella recipe in the land? I am not sure, but this one looks good to me from Spain on a Fork: AUTHENTIC SPANISH SEAFOOD PAELLA. It’s loaded with Spanish flavors, and it is said to be easy to make. Just use the right Paella pan, and you know, I’d say use a my personal favorite the Dansk Paella pan.
The Recipe The Party
So, now you’ve got the mo. Vintage Dansk cookware (because it is my favorite), an authentic storyline for the house party, and a dish designed for sharing, happiness and bringing people together. And I think of the fish markets, butchers, and the outdoor markets in Spain as ingredients are gathered to bring home and prepare a culinary explosion of flavor. In Bonny Wolfe’s Paella Perfect blog she swears by cooking on the open fire. The gathering outside, a sip of sangria, the right music and you might as well be in Spain.
Shop Local & Keep it Truly Authentic
So get outside (even if you opt for the stove), and make an effort to support your small local businesses when you conjure up your so very cool Paella party. In my little, almost seaside town of Dunedin, Florida, we have two great places (that are local, small businesses) to shop for the freshest fish and seafood, caught from local waters every morning, organic meats, and vegetables on the very same street. Jenson Brother’s Seafood and Nature’s Food Patch have it all, and even though it may cost a little more, it is worth every penny, especially now. So, do your part to shop local too. Let’s keep our locals up and running, where ever you may be.
Good Things to Go With
Oh yeah, the Paella. It’s going to be smoking hot. And, as part of the planning part, get your shopping list ready because you’ll probably want a little something to go with the main dish. Here’s what I found and it looks divine from On the Gas, the art, science and culture of food, What To Serve With Paella: From Appetizers To The Drinks: some ideas include a cheese and olive platter, toasted Marcona almonds, fried sweet plantain slices, sangria, and dry sherry. But there’s more, so check it out, especially the desserts.
Have Fun & Keep It Real
It’s all about the gathering at the end of the day, so don’t cheat yourself out of a hella good time. I guess that’s part of the planning part, by getting a bunch of stuff done the day before makes party day, a fun trip. By the way, it’s also swell to have a few authentic good vintage serving pieces and barware to sprinkle around the serving island, picnic table, or patio. So, if you’re into that kind of thing, come visit my shop: VintageByJolie.
One Last Thing (About Dansk)
And in case you’re still interested in knowing why I think Dansk is the cookware bomb of all time, and the best to pair up with your next paella party, check out some deets by Kitchn, 5 Reasons We Love Dansk Kobenstyle Cookware:
” … Dansk Kobenstyle cookware (and tableware) were created as a collaboration between Americans Martha and Ted Nierenberg, who discovered the work of designer Jens Quistgaard in Copenhagen and convinced him that his stylish designs could be mass-produced. Quistgaard became one of the most recognizable influences in mid-century modern design. … their collaboration perfectly illustrated the marriage of Scandinavian design and American mass-production that was at the heart of mid-century modern. …”
Bye, for now …
So, if you like good old stuff, come round and visit me. It’s always an adventure. Stay tuned for whatever comes my way next! Yours, truly, Jolie

swank Yoga Pants are for Yoga

Isn’t it a pretty idea that you can bring some kick ass style to the party? Of course it is. I don’t know about you, but somehow, the exact same dress that can be purchased by hundreds and thousands of people just ain’t gonna cut it. It’s a California dreamin’ fricken retro house party! You dig?

Comfortable Glam is a Real Thing
Just like the bewitching, yet swank cocktail hour invented by the mid centurions, the hostess gown also took front and center stage when entertaining at home. From The New York Times: “Hostesses Slip Into Something a Little Practical” the hostess gown was “… a billowing, brightly colored maxi-dress, often with a forgiving waistline, or no waistline — sort of a cross between an evening formal and a bathrobe.
The idea was to balance one’s respect for and command of the occasion with the right to sprawl comfortably in one’s living room on oversize lounging cushions, perhaps leaping up from time to time to rearrange the cheese straws. For hostess gowns had very little to do with actual cooking …”

savage salvage & the vogue rogue guy
Not Everyone Can Pull it Off, But I Have Faith in You.
savage – men’s vintage & more It is a true fact of life, not everyone can pull it off. But, some can. These people are my people. I guess it might just be a reminiscent dream for me, some might call it a flash back. You know, a time when it wasn’t just gals who pushed fashion and style boundaries, but the guys, who styled a look that was light years away from the madmen uptight suits of the 50s, (although they did nicely morph into the 70s). I was sewing drawstring cotton pants in big color and non traditional prints for my boyfriend, who looked defiantly happy and badass in them.
When Vogue Went Rogue
Jimi Hendrix was wearing layers of bohemian tapestries and velvet, David Bowie in his gender bending maxis and gowns, opened doors to fashion freedom. In the beginning these new looks that found their way to the streets of the Haight in San Francisco and hip cities across the globe consisted of hand made, organic, free flowing form and design. Gals, mostly were sewing up a new generation of style whose aesthetic was soon picked up by “the establishment” and knock offs of the original street style looks were manufactured and distributed for, you know, the hippies. And there was nothing wrong with that.
Turn on, Tune In
The world turned on. Color. Patterns. Prints. Texture. Style. Design. The sum was greater than it’s parts, these things transformed a generation into a bubble of free love, tree huggers and peacemakers. Every garment whispered sensuality and possibility. Make no mistake, wearing a St. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band Nehru Styled jacket was a blatant act of revolution against the monotone and mediocrity of the old guard establishment. Fashion changed the course of history, and that was very cool. I am not sure that today’s fashion says anything, to any body. Everyone looks pretty much the same, and not in a good way. Well, just look!
I don’t know about you, but I do not see any redeeming qualities about the look on the right, as styled by Adam Sandler. Dapper Dan, I might be in love with you. In & Out of the Closet
So, in my travels I shop for these counter culture iconic pieces that many men kept almost forever. Guys tend to just keep their stuff, or they have outgrown the size but not the magic of the memory. Worn Stories on Netflix dives in, and awakens stories that would have otherwise been left in the closet forever.
That’s What She Said …
I like what Tanya Sharma has to say on the LovetoKnow blog: ” … These later years witnessed a slew of decidedly feminine details that changed the face of men’s fashion completely. In addition to wearing their hair longer, men began to adopt bright, vivacious colors; gregarious paisley, floral and polka dot prints; velvet pants; wide belts and more. Even jewelry designers joined in the adventure and began creating collections made specifically for men. This newfound freedom and style of dress may have seemed experimental at first, but it quickly became the norm as men all over the world embraced its spirit. …”
Here are a few of my favorite things. The Day the Music Died
I am not sure what day it was, but I think it was in the mid 80s during the Reagan years when sweatshops, slave labor and mass production of cheap clothing made in China became the American way. A visually decadent decline in style, quality, and creativity along with the political pulse of the world as it transformed into something less than joyful before our very eyes. And now before our eyes we see landfills over filled with the billions of garments that were and are designed to be worn and thrown away. Not cool.
Good Things
Getting back to the joy. It is always a good day when ridiculously fab old stuff owned by only the coolest guys in the land surface again, found and shared the world over. That, is a very good day.
And, while I was out peaking around internet land, I found this site for all things men’s vintage which is pretty killer: dressthatman.com. … even I like it. Another piece, a beautifully written and fun article by Alexandra Rowland for Esquire about an historical figure, Beau Brummell as fashion’s villain is worth checking out. So good! And I don’t lie.
And so …
If any of this strikes a chord, there may be something in my Etsy world that will be a perfect fit for you. Visit me! Vintage By Jolie

the wedding gift conundrum
and the argument for thinking outside of the predictable wedding gift box …
Jasmine Baetzel Photography – Savannah Fine Art Film Wedding Photography So, you’ve received the much anticipated wedding invitation. You already have just the right gift in mind, right? I love that idea. You’re not only thrilled with ridiculous happiness and joy for the couple, but already know the exact, perfect, and impossibly insightful gift to give. Which has happened to no one, ever.
Let’s Get Real
After all, how much do you know anyone, really? Especially when you will be giving a gift that’s expected to be kept for – I don’t know, a lifetime? That’s a very long time. The trendy instapot, auspicious air fryer and sassy sandwich grill will be obsolete versions of themselves by the time the honeymoon is over. Besides, this should be a time for romanticism and creative thought, not electric appliances.

Mid Century Modernists Had It Right …
or, it’s time to reinvent an epic cocktail party life.
What were we thinking? How did we ever let go of the mid century trending “then” cocktail party? A good strong Mai Tai, perfectly stirred, not shaken. Cocktails served in style in chilled glass tumblers. Olive & celery trays, little Vienna sausages on frilly toothpicks. Not a red Solo cup or plastic serve ware in sight. Nice, Right?
Especially now.
Sipping chilled pink martinis on the patio with the neighborhood tribe, Booker T. & the MG’s playing Green Onions on the record player, dancing it up after a few Mai Tai’s. Pretty, pretty, perfect.
All of this being mostly in the past, it made me wonder; How did the cocktail party actually come to be, and why not just get back to it?
Find good old and interesting barware. Some of my favorites are Culver, Osborne Kemper, Fred Press and Gay Fad. Bring the party back home. The mid century modernists had it right, from the fab barware, stunning dresses & hostess gowns to swanky men in suits. Get Social, mid century style.
Humorous Glasses, by Unknown Maker/Designer Osborne Kemper Thomas Of course, people have been drinking at home for time eternal, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that the concept of an actual cocktail party evolved.
Concocting cocktails was an after effect of Prohibition. The fruity mixes disguised bad tasting bootleg liquor, and combined with getting caught running liquor, these new little concoctions meant that intimate soirees came to rule the day.
Later, after World War II, houses were being built by the thousands, side by side, with yards, pools and patios. Newly marrieds, and parents of Boomers, created a new society in bedroom communities across the land.
With the mass exodus to the burbs, couples were left to their own devices. Clubs, bars and restaurants were left far behind in the cities they abandoned for suburban life. And just like that, cocktail party life made the suburbs tolerable. Boomers got a good look at how parties were done, some kids even made cocktails for their parents, think “Drapers”.
Moulin Rouge Tumblers by Fran Taylor, Gay Fad’s founder, Lancaster, Ohio Because entertaining at home became a trend that took the burb masses by storm, the art of cocktailing and hosting became a thing. And of course … keeping up with the Jonses was real, my friend. So, everyone went shopping downtown to buy the coolest in entertainment gear to be had.
Designers and manufacturers got on the money making bandwagon and produced a spectrum of killer barware to accommodate the masses. Great design. Made in the USA. Good times.
Parents died, Boomers grew up and old, some of the abandoned rec rooms still have the decanters, glasses, ice buckets, all lined up even after the party became just a happy memory. So, every now and then some of the “good stuff” surfaces, and it’s fun to envision the cocktail party that will continue in great iconic style, 70 years or so later.
T’ang Pattern Designed for Rubel, by 50s Designer Fred Press The glasses in the genre shown here were designed for middle America, the high brow cocktail parties among old money and the nouveau riche were decadently gorgeous which included makers like Tiffany, Norman Bel Geddes, Hermes and Gucci. Finding these works of art are as elusive today as in their hey day. But at the end of the day, aren’t we always on the hunt for the Holy Grail? One never knows. So stay tuned, and stay classy.
And if any of this sounds intriguing at all, there may be something in my Etsy world that will fit you just perfectly, come see!
Yours truly,
Jolie
